Calling all budding Picassos. This exciting, multi-dimensional subject has been designed to promote a very hands-on, adventurous and enquiring approach to Art & Design. This subject will help you develop as an imaginative, visual, effective learner and enjoy being an independent learner. Art and Design will enable you to advance your artistic and visual skills.

The subject promotes:

Self-confidence, self-discipline, commitment to your work and to the success of the group.
It encourages you to broaden your perception of community, national and global issues.
To have confidence in your own skills and expertise.
To explore visual language, new media, art, craft & design in our own and other cultures.

KS3 Information:

Within KS33 all our students have one hour of Art a week.

Y7 students You will cover the following topics in your art lessons
1: Fauvism – Colour theory and mixing. Looking at drawing techniques, mark making & wax resist techniques. Artists; Mattise, Derain, Vlaminck,

2: Aboriginal art – Investigating other cultures and different ways of creating art.

3: Portraits – Students will investigate realism and how to create a realistic looking portrait. Artists; Chuck Close, Jenny Saville, Frida Kahlo
Y8 students. You will cover the following topics in your art lessons

1: Mixed Media RAINFOREST Jungles, Natural Forms project. Painting, collage, relief & composition skills ARTIST: Henri Rousseau
2: Pop Art: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, group work skills. Half termly Home Learning task based on artist investigation. Details will be put in the student planner., Artists: Warhol, Claes Oldenburg.
3: Landscapes; Colour Theory & Mixing. Students will produce a painting inspired by Hundertwasser and David Hockney. Focus on perspective, contour drawing and low relief.

Y9 students. You will cover the following topics in your art lessons

1. Surrealism: Creating a surreal hand drawing, researching a surrealist artist and making a final piece based on a surrealist room. Drawing, painting, designing, perspective, planning skills. Artists: Dali, Magritte,

At Christmas the Year 9 students choose their options and begin their GCSE Art and Design course in the New Year.


Exam Board AQA 

The course is well established and flourishing and proves to be a popular option.

The work is assessed on four criteria.

· Work is mainly practical with some written research into other artists’ styles

· There is wide use of materials, media and experimentation.

· Critical studies includes the appreciation of artists, designer and cultures

· Exercises are based on direct observation, development of ideas from own work and that of others culminating in a final exam painting/representation

· Pupils show a journey of ideas and plans based on a theme, making sure it links to a selected artist or art style.

The large coursework element ensures that the effort, attitude and ability are fairly assessed and rewarded. The course structure allows students to be carefully monitored and closely advised throughout. Fine Art is challenging, exciting and rewarding.

Year 11: Topics covered are based on Self Image before students begin their exam project in the New Year. The exam project lasts a full term until Easter before a final 10 hour practical exam concludes the course.
