Re: Industrial Action – Thursday 10 July 2014
I am writing to inform you that on 10 July there is planned industrial action in the form of a strike. This is part of a national campaign about wages and is not against the school itself. The NUT, Unison, Unite and the GMB have all decided to strike on that day.
Obviously, this is potentially disruptive to the normal running of the school and parents will be aware that strike action in the past has caused a full or partial closure of the school. In this case, however, we are anticipating that we will be open to all students for some or all of the day.
The 10 July is our final Personal Development Day of this academic year and we have joined forces with Sheffield Hallam University in order to provide a day of activities based around a theme of the Tour de France, which, of course, starts in Yorkshire this week. All Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 students will be involved in these activities all day, working alongside our own staff as well as our guests from Sheffield Hallam University.
Some Year 10 students will be undertaking elective work experience during that week and they should obviously attend these placements on 10 July. The rest of Year 10 will be visiting East Riding College, as part of the school’s post-16 guidance programme. This visit takes place in the morning, with students returning to school at 12.00pm. School will not be open to Year 10 students in the afternoon and we would be grateful if you could make appropriate arrangements for your child on that afternoon. Year 10 students will be able to have lunch at the school if they so wish; but due to our anticipated reduced staffing levels on that day we will not be able to accommodate Year 10 students on site in the afternoon. Thank you to all parents for your understanding. I will contact you again should the circumstances of the strike change, or any other unions give notice that they are joining the industrial action. We are also in close contact with Sheffield Hallam and East Riding College and fully anticipate that both of these events will run.
